WILKES-BARRE — A Wilkes-Barre Area School District teacher has been suspended pending an investigation into a school incident, District Solicitor Ray Wendolowski confirmed Monday.

Wendolowski said he could not release more information, but sources said the incident apparently included the teacher locking a student in a closet.

The school board has scheduled a special meeting for general purposes on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the GAR Memorial High School auditorium, though there is no indication the meeting has anything to do with the incident. Board president Denise Thomas had previously suggested a special meeting might be necessary this month.

An informational meeting is also scheduled Thursday at the same location beginning at 6 p.m. “regarding site analysis.” The board has been looking at locations for a planned new high school intended to consolidate grades 9-12 in Meyers and Coughlin high schools.

The board originally voted to build a new school where Coughlin stands, but the Wilkes-Barre zoning board denied a request for a needed zoning variance.

The board then asked the four firms hired as the district’s “design team” to look at three additional sites, but one in Plains Township near the Susquehanna River has been eliminated because part of it has been flooded in the past, as well as other issues related to site preparation.
