AVOCA — Speeding has been a problem on side streets in the borough, so council president John Boone proposed an ordinance Thursday to resolve the issue.
Boone said he is seeking a measure to lower the speed limit on side roads that include Grove Street, South Street, William Street, Pittston Avenue and Packer Street, to name a few.
“I was surprised to find out that we don’t have an ordinance and the speed is set at 25 miles per hour by the state,” Boone said. “I looked to see if we can do something to lower that. We’re waiting to hear from the solicitor and the chief of police if there is a limit to how low we can go, or if we’re bound to that 25 miles per hour.”
Boone doesn’t know for sure if the 25-mph limit is in place for all the side streets.
“The understanding was that if we don’t have an ordinance, then it’s just assumed by the state to be 25 miles per hour,” he said. “So, I thought we needed to put a little more bite down and curb some of the speeding around town.”
There is no guarantee the speed limits can be changed. But if so, the limits would be addressed at a future council meeting.
Also during the meeting, councilman Mike Fuller provided an update on the borough Farmers Market, saying a dozen vendors have signed up and more are reaching out to him.
The market is set to begin Wednesday, June 21. It will be held at the M J Mac Karey Snacks Inc. property on McAlpine Street.
“Things are looking pretty good,” Fuller said. “We’re going in the right direction.”
In other business, council members approved:
• The re-hiring of 17 part-time police officers for the months of May, June and July.
• A $200 donation to the Avoca Ambulance Association for a radio to be used in the new borough truck.
