WILKES-BARRE — The city zoning board has approved the conversion of two houses on South River Street into multi-unit apartment buildings.

Owner Joshua Zuder resubmitted applications for variances after the board requested more specific information at last month’s public meeting.

According to the plans presented to the board Wednesday, Zuder will create a three-unit apartment building at 279 S. River St. Each unit can house a maximum of four people for a total of 12 residents. Two apartments will be in the main house and the other will be in the carriage house.

The second property next door at 281 S. River St. will have two apartments, each with a maximum of four people for a total of eight residents.

There are a total of six parking spaces as required by the city’s zoning laws.

Prior to the start of the public meeting, the board recognized John Bergold and Carl Naessig for their exemplary service. They were replaced this year when their terms expired.

Bergold was on the board for nine years since 2008. Naessig served for five years since 2012.
