WILKES-BARRE — The city will celebrate the nation’s independence with its 37th annual Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration on Tuesday in Kirby Park.

The event will kick off at noon. Afternoon festivities will include 26 food and craft vendors, amusement rides and games, with music and a firework display in the evening.

“The city is proud to host this yearly event, and (it) is truly a team effort between our Special Event Coordinator Patty Hughes and our DPW, police and fire departments,” Mayor Tony George said in a press release. “There is no better way to commemorate the birth of our nation than to celebrate with all members of our community.”

The Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic will perform at 7:30 p.m. The appearance is sponsored by Martz Group.

Fireworks will begin at dusk. The park will close immediately after the display.

There will be parking in some small lots at the park, but space is limited. All meters are free on the holiday. Visitors are encouraged to walk if they live or park close by, since the weather is expected to be fair, said Tyler Ryan, assistant to the mayor.

Wilkes-Barre residents are advised to use caution and be aware of increased pedestrian traffic during the event. The city asks that visitors do not block traffic.

No alcoholic beverages, glass containers, smoking or fireworks are allowed in the park. Ryan stressed that dogs and other pets also are not permitted in the park during the event.

“We’re expecting a large crowd. Just please follow the rules … that will make it an enjoyable night for everyone,” Ryan said.
