WILKES-BARRE — A ceremony at the Luzerne County Courthouse this morning will honor the memory of Corrections Officer Kristopher Moules.

The 25-year-old from Larksville died in an accident at the prison exactly one year ago today.

The tragedy occurred during a physical altercation with inmate Timothy Gilliam Jr. that caused both men to fall 59 feet down an elevator shaft to their deaths, authorities say.

The county invites all citizens to a short ceremony at the flagpole on the south lawn of the courthouse, 200 N. River St., at 8:30 a.m.

Luzerne County Correctional Services Division Head Mark Rockovich, who planned the event, hopes people will pay their respects to Moules. He reiterated that Moules died while serving the citizens of the county.

“We’re not trying to make this a small thing,” he said. “We’re trying to remember this young man who lost his life.”

The ceremony will open with a presentation of colors by the Luzerne County Correctional Facility Honor Guard, followed by the national anthem sung by Alicia Lynn, and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Deputy Warden Samuel Hyder.

An invocation will be given by Father Jim Alco, and a Correctional Officers Prayer will be offered Pastor Jim Wilbur.

Opening remarks will be given by Rockovich.

Hyder and County Manager David Pedri will also speak.

After the presentation of a memorial by corrections officers and the lowering of the flag by the honor guard, Lt. Robert W. Hetro will play taps.

Finally, Joann Jones will perform “God Bless America,” and Chris Lynch will lead a performance of “Amazing Grace.”

Uniformed personnel are encouraged to dress in full uniform, but they are not required to do so.

Free parking will be available in the parking garage on Water Street.
