TUNKHANNOCK — A 90-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car outside her home Tuesday night, and police say the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Maxine Lane Stroka, 231 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, was taking her garbage out around 8:30 p.m. when John Russel Hanyen struck Stroka while driving eastbound on West Tioga Street, according to Tunkhannock Township Police.

Stroka was transported to Tyler Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

According to a witness, Hanyen pulled over to the side of the road, got out of his Hyundai Elantra and looked around before getting back in and driving off.

The witness was able to take down the license plate number on Hanyen’s vehicle, and Hanyen was later identified as the driver, authorities say.

At around 10:40 p.m., a trooper observed Hanyen’s vehicle traveling westbound on Route 6 in Tunkhannock Township and stopped him. Police say Hanyen was observed to be under the influence of alcohol, and he was taken for a blood test.

Hanyen, 55, of Milan, Bradford County, was charged with homicide by vehicle while under the influence, driving under the influence, failure to give information and render aid, failure to notify police of an accident, and related counts. Additional charges may be forthcoming.

Hanyen was arraigned and committed to the Wyoming County Correctional Facility for lack of $75,000 bail.
