DALLAS TWP. — On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors discussed creating an ordinance that would require residential rental properties to be inspected each time a tenant moves in or out.

Code Enforcement Officer Carl Alber said he is seeing a lot of issues with rental properties that lease to multiple people who are not related, such as college students. Solicitor Tom Brennan told Alber to research similar ordinances in other municipalities and that he’d propose an ordinance at next month’s meeting.

In related business, the board amended the township’s existing rental property ordinance to include a definition of a family.

The definition is: One or more persons occupying a dwelling unit and living together as a single nonprofit housekeeping unit. Foster children placed in the care and custody of a family shall be deemed to be a member of the family. The amended ordinance also states that a group of four individuals who are not related by blood, marriage or legal adoptions, shall not be deemed to constitute a family.

The board awarded a bid for the Stredney Road paving project to Brdaric Excavating, the lowest bidder, in the amount of $105,355, pending approval from the county’s Office of Community Development.

Police Chief Robert Jolley announced that the police department will host a Special Needs Open House from noon to 3 p.m. on May 3.

The purpose of the event is to provide those with special needs a relaxed and fun experience at their local police department, said Jolley. Registration is required.

Anyone who wishes to attend can call the police department at (570) 674-2003 or email: [email protected]. Office hours are from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.
