LUZERNE — Any other day, it may have been known as the Coal Street Tavern. But on Saturday, the popular Luzerne spot was known by a different name: Santa’s Workshop.
The banquet hall at Coal City Tavern was transformed into a winter wonderland as children played and laughed and had a merry ol’ time.
“We’re having this event with the Merchant’s Association. It’s a great way to give back to the community,” said Jeffrey Mullen, president of the Luzerne Merchant’s Association.
A sign on the side door of the tavern read “Santa’s Workshop,” and entering through that door was like finding a secret entrance into the North Pole.
Christmas music blared from the speakers as volunteers helped the children with their crafts and other fun little games. Along the table was an assortment of toys being raffled off, with proceeds going to the merchants as well as the Wyoming Valley West basketball team, who generously donated their time to come out and help work the event.
This is one of multiple events that the Luzerne Merchant’s Association holds throughout the year.
“Luzerne’s such a nice town, we have multiple events throughout the year to help the community,” Mullen said.
There was a bit of rain in the forecast, but after moving the festivities inside, the weather was hardly an issue.
For those to braved the elements, horse and buggy rides up and down Main Street were available for the kids.
In attendance was Santa Claus himself, smiling and waving and posing for photos with the kids, including 7-month-old Thomas Bauman, who was escorted by his mother.
Leonard Shovlin brought his son Nicholas and daughter Kaitlyn out to the event.
“It’s good family fun,” Shovlin said. “The kids are having a lot of fun.”
