Mr. and Mrs. Stanley J. Cooper Jr., Wilkes Barre, are celebrated their 70th wedding on Aug. 8.

A native of Plymouth, Stan met Mary Jane Howze, a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell, when as a member of the 1684 Engineers he was stationed in Texas during World War II. The couple was married in Austin, Texas, in a small ceremony in the chapel of the University of Texas. Three days after their marriage, Stan was sent to Washington state to be shipped out to fight the war in Japan. Before that could happen, the war had ended and the couple made their home in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, later moving to Wilkes-Barre, where they still live today.

Stan is the son of the late Stanley J. and Elizabeth Evans Cooper. Mary is the daughter of the late James and Dorothy May Howze.

They have one son, David J. Cooper and his wife Karen K. Cooper, and a grandson, Glenn Cooper and his wife Brandi Cooper, and a great-granddaughter, Kaylin Cooper, all of Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania.

Stanley is an avid fisherman and a well-known fly tyer. He and his father, Stan Cooper Sr., were owners of the Fly Stretch in Plymouth. He continues to tie flies. Mary retired from Penn Millers Insurance Company in 1988.

The couple is active in their church, Wyoming Valley Presbyterian Church, having served in a variety of positions over the years. They have wonderful memories of family vacations with relatives traveling to Colorado, Hawaii, Texas, California, Washington , Florida and several cruises to name a few.

The couple will celebrate with family and friends at a dinner in their honor and a reception at their church.
