(AP) NUMBERS: Burger King says its profit surged in the third quarter as sales rose overseas and it saw lower restaurant expenses, mostly due to selling off more company-owned restaurants to franchisees.


DETAILS: Sales fell 0.3 percent at North American restaurants open at least a year, which executives blamed on tough competition and the weak economy. Its performance overseas was stronger, however, and overall global sales rose 0.9 percent at restaurants open at least a year.


BIG PICTURE: While the company's new lower-calorie fries introduced toward the end of the quarter are drawing in more customers, executives stressed that the economic climate remains challenging.
