(AP) The newest "American Idol" judge has said at a Boston tryout for the Fox show's upcoming season fans should "expect the unexpected."

Harry Connick Jr. joins Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban on the reality show. He said at Wednesday's tryout he thinks "the whole fun of it is not knowing what to expect."

The jazz singer and musician has been an "Idol" mentor. Lopez was a judge in 2011 and 2012. Urban was a judge last season with bickering divas Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj (mih-NAHJ').

Lopez was asked if she has advice for Connick. Urban joked, "Yeah, shut the hell up." Lopez also said "less talking."

Connick says the focus Lopez and Urban give to contestants makes it exciting for viewers.

The next "Idol" season begins in January.
