POLICE-REWARDING RESTRAINT

PHILADELPHIA — In 12 years, Philadelphia Police Officer Eric Tyler has never had to shoot anyone, but he thought February 24 might be the day after he arrived to the scene of a man threatening to kill his colleague. A split-second decision that started with Tyler considering using deadly force ended in the choice to instead Taser the subject, who was unarmed. Tyler is among more than 40 Philadelphia officers who have received awards for defusing interactions with suspects, one of the few departments to honor restraint on par with awards for valor. EXCHANGE-CORPSE FLOWER

PITTSBURGH — It’s baaaack! If you like a flower whose bloom gives off an overwhelming scent of rotting flesh — and, really, who doesn’t? — Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens has a smelly treat for you. Amorphophallus titanum, more commonly and descriptively known as the corpse flower given its stench — nature’s con job of attracting the beetles and flies that pollinate it — is set to bloom in mid-June. The flower, named “Romero,” will remain on display in the Palm Court until it blooms_an extremely rare event that occurs only every three to seven years. Phipps will offer late-night visitation hours, branded merchandise, and a special membership package for those who want to monitor the progress of the stinky flower. Michael A. Fuoco, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
