WILLIAMSPORT — Greg Myers kept Nanticoke alive in the Region 5 American
Legion playoffs in tossing a two-hitter in Nanticoke’s pounding of Cowanesque
Valley Wednesday. Thursday, he did it with his bat.
Myers went 3-for-5 with four RBI and John Welgosh pitched one-hit ball over
six innings as Nanticoke remained alive with a 7-3 victory over Towanda at
Bowman Field.
Nanticoke will face Williampsort today at Bowman Field, approximately 45
minutes after the Plains and Line Mountain game that is tentatively scheduled
for a 4:30 start.
“The kids have turned it up after losing the first game,” said Nanticoke
Manager Tom Kiewlak. “John Welgosh really came through for us today.”
Welgosh, Nanticoke’s fourth pitcher in its rotation, followed stellar
performances by Greg Baron and Myers. Allen Brown relieved Welgosh in the
seventh and pitched three scoreless innings to prolong Nanticoke’s season one
more day.
Nanticoke broke into the scoring column in the top of the fourth inning as
Harry Zdziarski walked to open the inning and went to second on a wild pitch.
Baron followed with a double to score Zdziarski for a 1-0 Nanticoke lead.
Nanticoke struck again in the fifth as Brent Makarczyk and Ryan Stetz
worked back-to-back walks to start the inning. A wild pitch sent Makarczyk to
third and Stetz to second. Myers then singled home both runners to give
Nanticoke a 3-0 advantage. Myers later scored on Baron’s ground ball to
increase the lead to 4-0 after five.
Nanticoke added three more in the sixth by loading the bases with no outs
and Stetz at the plate. Stetz then walked to force a run home and Myers
followed with another two-run single to put Nanticoke up 7-0 after six.
Towanda scored three runs off Welgosh in the seventh, but Brown came on and
shut Towanda down.
