Shirley M. Turner, 60, of Orchard Street, Glen Lyon section of Newport Township, passed away unexpectedly, early Tuesday morning, November 6, 2007, in the emergency room at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, where she was taken after being stricken ill at her home.
Born on June 24, 1947, in Nanticoke, she was a daughter of the late Edgar G. “Shorty” and Mabel (Dmyterko) Womelsdorf.
From an early age she and her family resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she graduated from the Bay Ridge Girls High School in 1965.
She later lived in Spotswood, N.J., eventually returning to this area in 1974 to make her home in Glen Lyon.
Prior to retiring, Shirley had been employed at Kids”R”Us, Wilkes-Barre Township, for 10 years and formerly at General Radio on South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre for a few years.
She had been a member of the former Glen Lyon United Methodist Church and attended the Newport United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her son, Thomas John Turner, who died in 2002.
She is survived by her husband, Frank Turner, with whom she celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on May 20, 2007; a daughter, Shannon Turner, at home; sons, David Turner and his wife, Kelly, of Hanover Township and Kevin Turner, at home; grandchildren, Thomas J. Turner Jr., Deandra Turner, Korey Turner and Jordyn Turner; brothers, Edgar G. “Sonny” Womelsdorf II and his wife, Judy, of Benton; and Alan Womelsdorf, of Montclair, N.J.; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday from the Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with Anita McGowan, staff chaplain, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, officiating. Private interment will be in the Newport Center Cemetery, Newport Township. Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
