The recently formed Greater Nanticoke Area Athletic Recognition Committee wants to remember the past, present, and to consider the future accomplishments of their respective schools: Nanticoke High School, Nanticoke Area Joint High School, Newport High School, Harter High School, The John S. Fine, and the current Greater Nanticoke Area School District.

The group has planned a wall/hall of fame to be unveiled and dedicated Feb. 4 in a hallway at the high school, scheduled for approximately 6:45 p.m. between the junior varsity and varsity basketball games. It will feature plaques from all the state basketball teams from 1923 to 1990 plus individual state plaques of athletes who achieved state recognition from1957 to 1967.

The first inductees will be Michael Kwak, 1957; Kenneth Legins, 1960 and 1961; William James, 1961; Richard Kiewlak, 1961; Joseph Shepela, 1962; Robert Grabinski, 1962; Joseph Grzymski, 1963 and 1964.

In addition, with this dedication will be the display of new trophy cases that were built by the school students, as a result of the persistence of donations by this committee. Two special recognition plaques for Steve Bilko Sr. and Pete Gray will also be added.

The committee is trying to obtain the address of athletes and need for the following:

• Any person or family member of Pete Gray

• Any person or family member of Joseph Grzymski – 1964 Nanticoke High

• Any person or family member of Robert “Bob” Grabinski – 1962 Nanticoke High

Anyone knowing any of the information please call the Nanticoke area school at and leave a message Nanticoke School District at 570-735-1270

The athletic committee’s first group of inductees graduated prior to the first school merger and takes great pride in their accomplishments. The committee would like to continue to add athletes deserving of a place on the wall and also to build more trophy cases but will need the help of from interested people including alumni who would be willing to continue this tradition.
