King’s College: Corin Johnson of Wilkes-Barre has been named director of
student accountsJohnson is a 1986 graduate of King’s College, where she
received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She also completed a
postgraduate double major in accounting through King’s College and Luzerne
County Community College.
   
She is pursuing a master’s degree in organizational management at College
Misericordia.
   
Previously, she was employed by the Sallie Mae Loan Servicing Center as an
accountant in the financial reporting department.
   
Best Western Genetti Motor Lodge: Coleen James, an employee for more than
16 years, has been appointed banquet manager at the Hazleton motel. She is
responsible for the catering and services.
   
Interim Career Consulting: Richard Domrzalski has been appointed director
of the firm’s Northeastern Pennsylvania business unit in Allentown.
   
He replaces Charles Kranz, who recently retired.
   
Domrzalski has 14 years experience at Interim. Previously, he was a manager
at Air Products and Chemicals, Incorporated.
   
A graduate of Drexel University, he received a master’s degree from the
University of Pennsylvania.
   
Wyoming Valley Health Care System: James P. Carmody has been appointed vice
president of human resources.
   
He received an undergraduate degree from the University of Scranton and a
master’s degree from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
   
Previously, he was employed as director of human resources at WEA
Manufacturing in Olyphant.
   
Atlas Capital Funding: The company announces one promotion and two hirings:
   
Patti Millerick has been promoted to branch manger, responsible for the
Wilkes-Barre branch operations and business development.
   
She has 10 years banking experience, including 1 1/2 years at Atlas Capital
Funding.
   
Millerick received a bachelor’s degree in English from King’s College and
has taken courses from the American Institute of Banking.
   
Tony Piestrak has been appointed a loan consultant.
   
A graduate of King’s College with a degree in business administration and a
minor in marketing, he has six years sales experience.
   
Barbara Roberts has also been appointed a loan consultant.
   
A former Penn State University student, she has 12 years sales, marketing
and business development.
   
T-R Associates: Gareth D. Griffiths has been named an account executive at
the Archbald facility.
   
He has 15 years outside sales experience and is responsible for marketing
key accounts in the Microcomputer Division.
   
A Clifford Township resident, he is a graduate of Mansfield University.
   
Data Systems Network Corporation: John O. Lychos Jr. has been appointed
chief financial officer of the Farmington Hills, Mich., firm.
   
Formerly vice president and controller for Waste Management, Lychos, a
certified public accountant, has more than 20 years’ experience in corporate
finance and accounting.
   
A native of Wyoming Valley, Lychos is a graduate of Wilkes University. He
is a resident of Novi, Mich.

Pioneer American Bank: Jerry Orloski has been appointed to the bank’s Lower
Valley Business Development Advisory Board.
   
Orloski, of Mountaintop, has served as assistant vice president of
marketing for Orloski’s Service Stations and Quik Marts for 16 years.

College Misericordia: Denis Anson, assistant professor of occupational
therapy, has been elected to the board of directors of the Rehabilitation
Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America.
   
CONFERENCES
   
Forty Fort Eye Associates: Dr. Jason Smith of Forty Fort attended the 18th
annual International Contact Lens Conference at the Hyatt Regency, Inner
Harbor, Baltimore, Md.
   
The four-day event included educational seminars and continuing education
courses. It was sponsored by the Maryland Optometric Association and the
American Society of Contemporary Ophthalmology.
   
Dr. Smith is in private practice and is a partner at Forty Fort Eye
Associates and the founder of Home Eye Care.
   
College Misericordia: Lalitchandra Shah, assistant professor of
occupational therapy has been chosen to make a presentation at the world
Federation of Occupational Therapists in Montreal, Canada.
   
His presentation is on “Functional Evaluation for Severe/Profoundly
Handicapped Clients.”
   
And, David Wright, associate professor of history, presented his paper, “On
the Origins and Significance of Le Pen and the National Front,” at the annual
Society for French History Conference in Ottawa, Canada.
   
AWARDS
   
Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh: Franklin First Savings Bank and
Lackawanna Housing Development Corporation were honored as “Pillars of the
Community” for the Lackawanna Housing Development, Scranton.
   
The Lackawanna Housing Development Corporation, in order to shorten the
waiting lists for public and Section 8 housing in the Scranton area, acquired
vacant property and renovated six housing units.
   
Five of the units were rented to very low-income families and one unit was
sold through a lease-purchase agreement to a low-income home buyer.
   
Franklin First Savings Bank, secured a $25,000 Affordable Housing Program
grant from the bank to provide funding for renovation of the units and down
payment assistance to home buyers. The $183,000 project also received
financial support in state and local grants.
   
First Financial Group: Joseph C. Giunta has been honored by Security Mutual
Life Insurance Company as a distinguished associate.
   
He was recognized as a leading representative in the sale of group
insurance products at the company’s group division conference held at the
Kingsmill Resort and Conference Center, Williamsburg, Va.
   
The firm also was awarded the Leading Agency award for the Northeast region
at the annual leaders’ conference of Guardian Life.
   
And, the Wilkes-Barre office was recognized for superior achievement among
individual offices.
   
Dennis Eckels, office manager, received an award for sales and marketing
leadership.
   
Wilkes University: Welton Farrar, professor emeritus, received a frame
portrait from members of the business and economics department in recognition
of his more than 50 years of service.
   
Farrar joined Wilkes as an economics instructor in 1948 after receiving
bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.
   
A professor of business, he served as chair of several committees,
including fringe benefits, student publications and academic freedom. He also
was the director of sports publicity and founded the school’s golf club.
   
Farrar retired in 1988 but continued to teach part-time for several years.
   
In his honor, the Welton G. Farrar Scholarship was established in 1989. The
award is given annually to an outstanding sophomore majoring in business
disciplines.
   
CERTIFICATION
   
Service 1st Federal Credit Union: Three employees have been certified as
sales trainers by the Credit Union National Association’s Business Development
Sales Training Certification Program in Madison, Wis.
   
Linda Brown, Jennifer Jevelle and Carol O’Hara have been trained in
building customer loyalty and are certified to train their co-workers.
   
Brown is the marketing manager. Jevelle is a member service representative
at the Penn State Geisinger Campus Office, Danville. O’Hara is the branch
supervisor at the Penn State Geisinger Wyoming Valley Office, Wilkes-Barre.
   
Lindsey Morden Claim Service: Nancy Vanderhook has qualified for the
Continuing Professional Development Program of the American Institute for
Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters and the CPCU Society.
   
An adjuster at the Kingston Office, she is pursuing an associate’s degree
in claims designation.
   
College Misericordia: Amy Pastva, assistant professor of physical therapy,
has been awarded a Certificate of Advanced Clinical Specialization in
Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy
Specialities.
   
She is one of fewer than 60 physical therapists in the United States to
receive the certificate and is the youngest physical therapist to meet its
requirements.
   
LICENSE
   
Communication Microwave Corp.: Carl P. Ungvarsky has been licensed as a
professional engineer by the Pennsylvania Registration Board for Professional
Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
   
Ungvarsky is the company’s Digital Systems group leader and has been
employed by Comwave, a Mountaintop area manufacturer of wireless communication
systems, for six years.
   
Ungvarsky is a graduate of Wilkes University, where he earned a bachelor’s
degree in electrical engineering. He is enrolled in the Master of Science in
Electrical Engineering program at Wilkes University.
   
NOTEWORTHY
   
Knight Ridder: Deborah Ann Withey, design consultant for Knight Ridder
newspapers, attended the World Association of Newspapers 51st Congress in
Kobe, Japan.
   
A former resident of Dallas, Withey was scheduled to examine the winners of
the Society of Newspaper Design’s world competition.
   
Penn State, Wilkes-Barre: Dr. Paul J. Schwartz, director of academic
affairs, has resigned to accept a position as dean of arts and humanities at
the State University of New York in Fredonia.
   
Penn State Geisinger Health Care System: Debbie Temarantz, a registered
nurse at the Central Wilkes-Barre office, has been named employee of the month
for June.
   
A graduate of Luzerne County Community College, where she earned an
associate’s degree in nursing, she has been associated with the Penn State
Geisinger Health System for more than four years.
   
Floriann Albert, an environmental aide at Penn State Geisinger Wyoming
Valley Medical Center, also has been named employee of the month for June. She
has been associated with the medical center for the past eight years.
