Helen B. Kobuta, 85, passed away on Friday afternoon, Feb. 26, 2010, at Davis Manor in Mountain Top.

She was born on June 9, 1924, in the Brookside Section of Wilkes-Barre. She was a daughter of the late Michael and Barbara Swantek and step-parents, Cyprian and Agnes Lubianiec. Helen graduated from James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1942.

She was a member of Saint Stanislaus Church in Wilkes-Barre.

Prior to her retirement, she worked in the canteen at the Social Security Building on North Main Street in Wilkes-Barre. Before that, she worked at Heavenly Shoes in Hanover Township as a machine operator. She was a member of the Boot and Shoe Union as a chairperson.

Throughout her life, Helen and her husband, Metro, loved going on trips with their friends, playing bingo, attending polka dances, bowling and attending wrestling matches, baseball, football, and soccer games for their children and grandchildren. Helen was always their number one fan and cheerleader.

Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. The thing she loved most in life was spending time with her family. She always put them first. She was always kind and loving. She always had a smile for everyone. We all love her dearly and she will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her. Nana, we will never forget you. Helen was also very well known to all of the listeners of 97 BHT radio station, where she was known as “A.J.’s Nana” on her grandson’s radio show.

Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Metro (Mouchy), who passed away in 1986; her son, Metro, who passed away in 2002; her brothers, Joseph, Stanley, Walter, Edward, Peter; and her sister, Jenny Yolango.

Surviving are her daughter, Kathleen Hausknecht, and her husband, Stephen, Wilkes-Barre; daughter-in-law, Jane Kobuta, New Jersey; grandchildren, Raymond Hausknecht and his companion, Debra, Chadwick Hausknecht, Wilkes-Barre, and Michael Hausknecht, Wilkes-Barre; Demitrius Kobuta, New Jersey; Benjamin Kobuta, and his wife, Jennifer, New Jersey; and great-grandchildren, Jacob and Ryan Kobuta, New Jersey.

Helen’s family and friends would like to thank the caring and devoted staff at Davis Manor. She loved all of you dearly. Always remember her singing her heart out to her favorite song, “YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE.”

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.
