MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
   
WILKES-BARRE – Elizabethtown College lived up to its No. 16 national
ranking Friday as the Blue Jays posted an 85-65 victory over 25th ranked
King’s College in the first round of the Ramada Inn/Monarch Classic in
Scandlon Gymnasium.
    Bob Porambo led the Blue Jays (10-1) with 21 points, including the 1,000th
of his career in the second half. Chad Heller followed with 17 and Brian
Loftus and Rocky Parise chipped in with 14 and 13 points.
   
The Monarchs were led by Brian Horgan and Dennis Hobbs with 14 points each
and Jamar Stokes and Kasim Holloman added 13 and 11 each.
   
Elizabethtown meets Maine-Farmington at 6 tonight in the round-robin event.
King’s will face Maine-Farmington at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
   
College Misericordia 66, SUNY Cortland 54
   
WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. – College Misericordia’s Willie Chandler scored 34
points as the Cougars defeated SUNY Cortland in the opening round of the
Williams College Purple and Gold Tournament.
   
Cortland will face the loser of Friday night’s second game between Williams
and Southern Vermont in the consolation game at 1 p.m. today.
   
Chandler, the nation’s leading scorer in Division III last season, scored
21 first-half points as the Cougars (6-4) took a 29-26 lead. The Red Dragons
(3-5) tied the game twice in the second half on three-pointers by junior Kevin
DeVantier at the 19:28 and 16:45 marks. Trailing 45-36, Cortland went on a
10-2 run during an 8-minute, 10-second span, pulling within 47-46 on a Jon
DeHay tip-in with six minutes left.
   
It is not known who Misericordia will play next.
