I AM CALLING about the article in the paper on Friday about the woman on
Madison Street and the city won’t help her clean up her yard. I think it is
pitiful. Mayor McGroarty, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. You can’t see
fit to fix light poles and help a woman? It is Christmas time. Let’s have a
little Christmas spirit, and get with the program. Help the lady and take care
of the lights. I’m sure this is a multi-task administration and not just one
issue at a time.

I AM READING in the Times Leader how the Luzerne County detectives and the
Pennsylvania State Police are doing all this work on the double murder. I was
wondering, aren’t the Wilkes-Barre city detectives working on this case too?
What are they doing or does Mayor McGroarty have them out writing tickets
also?
EDITOR’S NOTE: No one ever said city police were not working the case.

YOU PEOPLE ON the Times Leader, you must be ecstatic that our Luzerne
County is going to be divided up into three different congressmen, we’re not
going to have our own congressmen. This is in direct result about your
constant bombardment of negative stuff about Luzerne County politics. You
brought this on. You people come from outside of the area, you try to save us
from ourselves and you have no idea what the issues really are in this county.
Now we are going to lose our congressmen, Lackawanna County is going to lose
our clout. You totally ruined this area.

THE NEXT TIME someone asks me to donate a blanket, food or money to
homeless people and children in other countries, I’m going to tell them to go
straight to (you know where), because I’m going to take care of the homeless
people here in Wyoming Valley first, like everybody else should.

THE EDITOR IS right about the age of children when they are allowed to
watch movies like “Saving Private Ryan.” But if a child wants to and if he
is at least 10, 12 years old, I think he should be allowed. Raising our
children to think that this is La La Land and nothing is ever going to ever
happen to us is wrong. Children have to be aware of the world so that when
they grow up they can take their place in it and not act like naive
adolescents all of their lives.

I AM READING YOUR front page on Saturday and noticed the article about the
DeNaples settlement and the “area battles to save road projects.” I notice
the name DeNaples and the fact that that money is going to an individual like
that, isn’t mentioned very prominently. Are you like everyone else around
here, intimidated by DeNaples as well?

EDITOR’S NOTE: We had already reported that fact.

WHAT, ARE YOU people related to Chester Zaremba? I called in twice and said
I want him to resign, I want him to resign immediately, and I want him to
resign unconditionally. I am tired of politicalness, I’m tired of police
corruptness in my City of Nanticoke. I want the magistrate, Whittaker, I want
him to resign also.

I WOULD LIKE to know who appraised the DeNaples property? I know the state
has to have an appraiser. How did they come up with $41 million? That comes to
over $300,000 an acre.

WOW~! SOMEONE WANTS to take the priests and ministers out of Congress.
There goes our last bit of ethics and conscience left in this country.

I DON’T UNDERSTAND why the Times Leader is so adamant about saving
Congressman Kanjorski’s district. The man is only in it for himself. When are
you people going to print that? You want to do some investigative reporting?
Find out where all of his projects are geared to.

TO THE CALLER that wants fresh faces in Luzerne County. You can keep your
fresh faces. We would rather have a safe community. That’s the way we want it.

I LOST MY DOG on Dec. 14. I live in Swoyersville. … He has the collar
with an old green license on it. I would appreciate it if I can get him back
for Christmas.

IN REGARDS TO the “old biddy.” I am one of them. I raised four children
and my husband worked until the day he died. I raised my niece for four years
and grandson for four years. I didn’t have an automatic washer, dryer until we
were married 18 years, until we could afford it. We had to run down and put
coal on the fire. This young person, I assume, says “get something to do.” I
think we already did it. Did you?

IS THERE A STATION in the area besides WNAK who plays easy listening
instrumental music?

I WOULD LIKE to know what the blue, green and red detour route signs are
that you see along the highway, I don’t have any idea what the meaning of
these things are? Also, can you give me any explanation why the road is marked
in such a ridiculous manner from the traffic light from the old Galaida’s
Restaurant heading toward the Hanover high school? You start out with two
lanes, goes into one and goes out to two lanes again. To me it doesn’t make
any sense.

I JUST READ the “Letters to the editor” from Mary Ann Whitonis. I think
that article is perfect. Exactly what I have been saying for the last year. We
are going to end up paying for this arena, whether we like it or not.

TO YOU PEOPLE moving here from Camden, Newark, the Bronx and Philadelphia,
you are not welcomed here, you aren’t wanted here. Stay back there and keep
your violence and your drugs back there.

THE OSTERHOUT LIBRARY should quit begging for money, they have several
endowment funds. … They have a fund from Mr. Isaac Osterhout as well as Mr.
Broaden who was a jeweler in Wilkes-Barre. Why don’t they use some of that
money? They file a 990 tax return. Let them show that 990 tax return and what
are they doing with their own funds. Quit begging. Use some of your own money.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We suspect you misunderstand the purpose of endowments.
Money is set aside and invested, with only the interest or dividends income
used. This assured a source of income for decades. As the story noted, those
investments did not produce as much income as expected this year. Osterhout
executive director Diane Suffren said the Isaac Osterhout endowment is legally
restricted so that only the income, not the principal, can be used. The
library’s 990 forms are available on the Web at http://www.guidestar.com, and
show endowments of about $6 million. Suffren said tapping into them “may
ultimately be what we need to do, but unfortunately that lowers the income for
upcoming years.”

ABOUT LUZERNE COUNTY Children and Youth and a raise? In my opinion, I don’t
think they deserve a raise, they don’t even deserve to have life insurance.
When I had a caseworker, they did nothing for me. All they did was harass me,
put me down. Never praised me for anything that I did right, it was always the
stuff I did wrong.

I TAKE OFFENSE at the person who called in and said the reason there is no
high tech companies here is a lack of skilled and educated workers in our
area. You don’t know what you are talking about. My daughter has two degrees
and has never been able to get a decent paying job in this area. She is
presently answering phones for a living. Most of the people in her company
have degrees but can’t find jobs. My son has a master’s degree and moved to
another state to get work. While I am at it, I would like to know where they
got the figures from when they write that the average pay for this area is
about $35,000? I don’t know anyone making that much except the dentists and
doctors. If it wasn’t for the unions we would all be making minimum wage.

IN TODAY’S PAPER, Tony Perrone GNA superintendent says health care costs
are so expensive it is taking over everything. Didn’t he tell the people of
Nanticoke just two years ago about the great contract he signed with the
teachers? Health care is certainly part of that contract.

TO THE PERSON with the white particles in their water. My guess would be
the cold water plastic drip tube in their water heater. They had a recall on
these because they used a defective product that disintegrated over the years.

IT ISN’T THE union that is keeping industry out of Wilkes-Barre, it is the
politicians that are getting paid not to bring it in.

AN EDITORIAL IN the Times Leader about the Penguins hockey team. I can
hardly believe that. Can you think any lower? I doubt it.

IS ANYONE ELSE sickened by these economic patriot ads I am hearing on the
radio? I am. What a joke.

I READ IN SAYSO about the two comments about the senior centers. I used to
work at a senior center and the gossiping that goes on there isn’t the worst
thing. I have seen meals that were made for seniors who have no other meal,
going home with employees and seniors were turned away. I have seen desk
clerks and people who are friends of the directors end up with the best seats
in the house and more pennies when you play bingo and the best yarn and
knitting needles and the best seats on the bus, and the people are denied
meals and are turned away and told that the logs are filled for the day
because they are waiting for their friends to call who are out shopping or
whatever. So there are a lot more abuse for the seniors that go on at these
centers.
