DALLAS TWP. – Police Chief Robert Jolley announced Tuesday night to the
township supervisors that the department received night vision equipment.

The night vision goggles give an advantage to the police when looking for
criminal activity or in the event that a person or child is missing, said
Jolley.
“Your flashlight can only go so far,” Jolley said, during the
supervisor’s monthly meeting.

The goggles cost $17,000 and were paid for by the Electronic Proving
Counter Drug Office Grant. This is a federal grant program through which
police departments can purchase specialized equipment that is often the same
as the military uses, Jolley said.

The township plans to apply for this grant again in 2004.

The grant program also provides a testing ground for the equipment by local
law enforcement. The township’s fire department had recently received infrared
goggles to sense heat.

In other business:

The township is considering entering an agreement with Dallas borough,
Kingston Township, and Lehman Township to share emergency services. The
agreement will place the municipality calling for assistance in charge of the
assisting townships. In return, townships will be reimbursed for any supplies
while assisting.
