CLARKS SUMMIT – Abington Heights High School will host a program “Bullying: What Can We Do About It?” Dec. 16, at 6:30 p.m.

The school is currently finalizing the agenda for the program, which will feature school officials, law enforcement personnel and legal professionals, who will give presentations and answer questions on bullying.

“It has been, and remains, a very serious issue,” said Superintendent Michael Mahon at the Abington Heights School Board’s yearly reorganization meeting Dec. 1.

“School districts across the region are dealing with this, and I know a great amount of planning and effort has been done by Mrs. (Pamela) Murray (Abington Heights High School principal) and her staff, and we want to encourage as many people as possible to come to what we expect to be a well done on an important topic.”

Murray said the purpose of the program is to educate and also create an open dialogue between the school, parents and law enforcement.

Because of the way bullying has changed during the years, Murray said all three of these groups need to work together in order to effectively impact the problem.

“Many times, it’s happening outside of the building, through technology, so we have to get the police involved, but we also need to get the parents involved,” said Murray.

“It’s a triangle. You need the school, you need the police, you need the parents, and all three groups working together can provide the most support for the students.”

In other business, the board voted during its meeting to appoint South Abington Township as the Abington Heights School District’s wage and local service tax collector for the 2011 calendar year.

The meeting was the last public meeting of the year for the board; it will meet Jan. 6, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.
