CHARGE DROPPED

School director’s theft charge dropped

Walter L. Walker of
Northwest Area had been wanted in Anne Arundel

County, MdWILKES-BARRE — A Northwest Area school director who had been
wanted in Maryland on a theft charge has had the charge against him dropped.

Authorities in Anne Arundel County, Md., sought the extradition of Walter
L. Walker in connection with a scheme involving the theft of more than $300 in
October 1992.

Walker, who has been on the Northwest Area School Board for nearly two
years, was taken into custody by Luzerne County Sheriff’s deputies in
December.

Walker was arrested when he went to the sheriff’s office to apply for a gun
permit. Walker used to work in Maryland, though he never lived there, he said
at the time.

That afternoon, then-County Judge Joseph J. Musto allowed Walker’s brother,
Thomas, to post a $35,000 bond to free him pending an extradition hearing.

That hearing never happened.

Anne Arundel County law-enforcement officials never served the warrant.
Officials there refused to release information about the nature of the
warrant, saying such information is always withheld until a warrant is served.
Last week, officials there dismissed the charge without comment.

Walker couldn’t be reached for comment on Friday afternoon. But at the time
of his arrest, he said he was surprised and wasn’t aware that he was wanted
for any crime.
