    Jaycees container drive continues
   
The container drive of the Berwick Jaycees will continue until May 10. This
year’s goal is $1,500Containers are located in various businesses in the
Berwick, Bloomsburg and Columbia Mall areas. Contributions can also be made by
mail by sending a check made payable to the Berwick Jaycees, St. Judes
Children’s Hospital Fund to: Berwick Jaycees, Attn: Gary Heimbach, P.O. Box
53, Berwick, Pa. 18603-0053.
   
To date, $1,011 has been raised.
   
DALLAS
   
CWU plans May
   
Fellowship Day
   
Church Women United will sponsor the May Fellowship Day, an annual event
that unites women of Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and other Christian
faiths, on Friday, May 2, at Dallas United Methodist Church, Church Street.
Lunch will be provided by the United Methodist group of the church.
   
Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Cost is $4.
Reservations must be made with Ruth Gavenus, 373 Rutter Ave., Kingston, Pa.
18704 by Thursday, April 24.
   
Worship services will begin at 1 p.m. with the theme “Planting Seeds in
Prepared Soil.” Guest speakers will be Kathy Beardsworth, Wilkes-Barre area
coordinator of Mercy Health Systems Pastoral Outreach Program, and Dr. George
Siles, director of The Green House Center.
   
Participants of the service will bring handmade lap robes and afghans that
will be distributed to Wyoming Valley nursing homes and hospice care.
   
KINGSTON
   
Science fair today
   
Saint Hedwig’s School, Kingston, will conduct its annual science fair
today. Students will explain their projects from 6 to 6:45 p.m. and an awards
ceremony will be held at 7 in the school hall.
   
LAFLIN
   
Street sweeping today
   
Laflin Borough would like to remind residents that street sweeping will be
conducted on borough roadways today. Residents are requested not to park their
vehicles on the street.
   
LAKE LEHMAN
   
Craft show
   
The Lake-Lehman Band Sponsors will hold their annual spring craft show from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Lake-Lehman High School.
   
Over 100 vendors will be on hand. There will be a Chinese Auction,
homebaked goods, food and refreshments. Admission is free.
   
LUZERNE
   
Borough begins street sweeping
   
Luzerne Borough Council has begun street sweeping. All motorists are
advised to obey street sweeping signs throughout the Borough.
   
In other news:
   
Luzerne Borough residents may burn paper and paper products only on
Wednesdays and Saturdays until June 1. Commercial establishments are
prohibited by law to open burn. Violators will be cited.
   
Borough Tax Collector John Lohman will be available at the Luzerne Borough
Building from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturdays. For
further information, call him at 288-9640.
   
SWEET VALLEY
   
Memorial Day parade and fair planned
   
The Sweet Valley Volunteer Fire Company is announcing their annual Memorial
Day Parade and fair for 1997. The schedule will be 5:30 to 11 p.m. May 22-24
and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., May 26.
   
The Fire Company will be celebrating its 50th year as a Volunteer Company.
Anyone wishing to participate in the parade or rent a lot, can contact Robert
Walsh, 477-5239.
   
WYOMING AREA
   
Reports ready
   
The Wyoming Area School District has announced that Progress Reports for
the third marking period (grades 7-12) are available. Parents may obtain the
reports between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. on today and Thursday at the Secondary
Center, Memorial Street. Teachers will be available to answer questions.
   
Progress reports will not be distributed to students. Parents should notify
their child’s teacher in writing if these times are not convenient. An
appointment can then be made with the teacher or principal to pick up the
reports.
