PLYMOUTH — The game was going just as the Wyoming Valley West Spartans
hoped Tuesday. They trailed by a goal entering the fourth quarter.

As strange as that strategy seemed, it worked.
Valley West held Bishop Hoban’s offense in check in the third quarter, then
scored two goals in the fourth to upset the Argents 3-2 in Wyoming Valley
Conference girls soccer.

“In the third quarter, we were looking for defense,” said Valley West coach
Chris Lacy. “In the fourth quarter, we wanted to go in down 2-1, no worse. We
weren’t worried about 2-2.”

Valley West’s Renee Williams quickly made the score 2-2, scoring on a
breakaway 1:06 into the fourth. Nina Kocylowski poked in the game-winner with
a minute to play.

“We had to win all our (Division) I-B games,” said Bishop Hoban coach Frank
Chadwick. “It’s a meat grinder of a schedule to begin with and stumbling here
made it that much harder.”

Bishop Hoban fell to 4-3 in Division I-A, dropping further behind Dallas
(6-0-2), Lake-Lehman (6-2) and idle Coughlin (5-2).

Valley West (3-3-1) moved into sole possession of second place in Division
I-B.

Valley West took a 1-0 lead midway through the first quarter when Toni
Morris scored from about 10 yards out on a Stacey Horn assist. However, Valley
West’s two main concerns defensively — Hoban’s Carlene Kratz and Megan
Augustine — struck in the second.

Kratz took a pass six yards from the backline and just outside the left
part of the penalty area. She fired a left-footed shot off the right post,
banking in the ball at 6:23 of quarter. Nearly five minutes later, Kratz
grounded a pass to Augustine, who gave Hoban a 2-1 lead by connecting from
near the 6-yard line.

“We worked on our marks on Augustine and Kratz, and kept them pretty much
in check,” Lacy said.

That was evident in the third quarter as Hoban maintained control, but
couldn’t build its lead.

Instead, Valley West tied the score early in the fourth. Williams, who made
some strong runs down the wings in the first three quarters, broke free on a
lead pass from Corrine Hoyes. Hoban fullback Katie Pearson tried to cut off
Williams, but Williams managed to boot in the tying goal from about 12 yards
out.

“Williams is one of our forwards, but we played her at outside mid for the
first three quarters,” Lacy said. “She helped us on the defense, then in the
fourth quarter helped us get the pressure.”

Williams then set up the game-winner with a throw-in. Hoban keeper Jess
Huda slapped it away, but the ball landed at the feet of three Valley West
players. Kocylowski took advantage of the opportunity to poke in her first
goal of the season.

“They were opportunists,” Chadwick said of Valley West. “They took
advantage of the chances they had. That’s the danger of hanging close with a
team like Valley West. You have to blow it open because they have such great
speed.”
