DIAMONDS
    … to the U.S. Department of Energy for its announcement that affected
former employees of Beryllium Corp. and their families will be compensated for
the devastating health problems, often leading to early deaths, that came from
working for the corporation, which had a plant in Hazle Township. Relief for
the sick and suffering workers and their families has been decades in
comingCertainly, U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski’s involvement moved things along to
a proper conclusion. It is sobering to know that Cold War casualties occurred
here at home in our own area.
   
COAL
   
… to those who would rather curse the darkness than light a candle or, in
a recent instance, would rather curse the potholes than communicate with
PennDOT. The transportation department distributed more than 400
postcard/questionnaires throughout Luzerne County in May asking people to rate
its pothole-repair efforts. Only 34 people responded- which leads us to
reflect on the many pothole complaints we get on our SAYSO line at winter’s
end. We, however, cannot fix the roads, but PennDOT can.
