A fire damaged a building housing a bar and apartments at West Lackawanna and
Seventh avenues in Scranton at about 4 p.m. Thursday. Scranton Assistant Fire
Chief Jack Davis said an unidentified man suffered first-degree burns and was
taken to Community Medical Center in Scranton. Several residents of the
apartments on the second and third floors of the three-story wood and masonry
building were left homeless, Davis said. The American Red Cross provided the
residents with temporary housing. The Broadway Bar, which occupies the first
floor of the building, sustained extensive water damage. Davis said the fire
started on the second floor, and the cause is under investigation. The
structure was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, but the blaze was
under control within minutes of the arrival of fire crews, Davis said.
Although the building is joined to two other structures, the fire was confined
to the building where it started, Davis said.
