SCRANTON – The U.S. Attorney’s Office has sought to postpone a hearing for Luzerne County Clerk of Court Robert Reilly to allow prosecutors and the defense time to work on a possible plea deal, according to court documents filed Wednesday.

Reilly was scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing today on a bribery charge. Federal prosecutors say Reilly accepted kickbacks from Barton Weidlich, a contractor who performed work in the Clerk of Courts office.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Gurganus filed a motion to continue the hearing, saying the government is working with Reilly’s attorney to resolve the matter. He requested the preliminary hearing be postponed 30 days.

Authorities are continuing to investigate expenditures from a records improvement fund Reilly oversaw. More than $970,000 from the fund was paid to LRW Solutions Group for work it performed on a records retention program.

The U.S. Secret Service recently served subpoenas to Eric Coombs, owner of LRW, and several county offices with records relating to the project.
