No local gun-permit

database being compiled

Civitas Media, parent company of The Times Leader, says it is not compiling a database of holders of “conceal and carry” permits.

Citing an email that went to newsroom employees throughout Civitas, bloggers and some national media outlets reported such a compilation was planned.

“Civitas Media never had any plans or intentions of publishing in print or online lists of holders of ‘conceal and carry’ permits,” CEO Michael Bush said in a statement. “Nor will Civitas Media develop databases of permit holders. A poorly crafted internal memo meant to highlight editorial discussions and planning incorrectly indicated that such a database was being planned; it has been considered and rejected.”

Pennsylvania doesn’t make its “conceal and carry” permit records available to the public.

United Way seeks projects

for Day of Caring in May

United Way of Wyoming Valley will hold its Day of Caring on May 9, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with an Awards Event breakfast program at the Genetti Hotel & Conference Center in Wilkes-Barre. Last year, more than 600 volunteers joined together to complete 41 different community projects in just one day.

Area non-profits and community groups are encouraged to submit projects in which they could use volunteer assistance on that day. Project request forms can be completed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5D9RFBJ. Submission deadline is Feb. 14.

Past projects include painting, planting flowers, litter pick-up, opening camps for summer programs, helping at daycare facilities, assisting special needs individuals, and many more. Organizations are also encouraged to submit projects tailored to senior volunteers and those who may not be up to physical tasks.

A list of all submitted projects will be shared with individuals and local businesses. United Way will then try to find and organize groups of volunteers to complete the projects.

Contact John Winslow at 570-829-6711, ext. 237 or johnwi@unitedwaywb.org with questions about submitting a project, event and t-shirt sponsorship opportunities, or any of the day’s other festivities.

Details to register for the free breakfast program will be shared in the near future. When the program ends at about 9:15 a.m., volunteers will report directly to their pre-selected community project for the remainder of the day.
