DALLAS: Daddow-Isaacs Dallas American Legion Post 672 is sponsoring the Pennsylvania 79th Annual Essay Contest which is entitled: “What Is Our Nation’s Responsibility To Our Wounded Veterans?”
With the media full of stories concerning IEDs and the wonderful new techniques for the use of prosthetics to help improve lives, this is a pertinent topic. Any student enrolled in grades 9-12 in a private, public or parochial school or who is home-schooled is eligible to participate. Information can be garnered at local schools or by calling Clarence J. Monetary prizes will be awarded. A first place winner will be awarded a $3,500 scholarship. The second place winner will be awarded a $3,000 scholarship. The third place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship. The local school winner must be determined by Feb. 1, 2014. Dallas American Legion will also offer local cash prizes.
Through the annual Department of Pennsylvania American Legion Essay scholarship contest, students are provided an opportunity to showcase their talents and abilities in English by using originality, accuracy, and research as evidence, while learning that the responsibilities and duties of good citizenship can be both rewarding and fun. As American Legionnaires, we fully believe that education is the cornerstone upon which the future of America is built. An oratorical contest based on the knowledge of the United States Constitution is also being sponsored by the National American Legion. James Baloga is the district chairperson for the oratorical contest.
DORRANCE TWP.: The Dorrance Township American Legion Post 288 will meet at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the Slocum Township V.F.W. Post 7918, located at 6592 Nuangola Road.

SHARTLESVILLE: “SALTS” who completed training at the Sampson Naval Station, members of the Sampson World War II Naval Station and Navy veterans from other conflicts are invited to the Sampson W.W. 2 Fall Reunion, slated for noon on Thursday at Haag’s Hotel, Third and Main streets, Shartlesville, according to a news release from John F. Mellon.
Following a luncheon, a speaker will focus on World War II and the status of the naval station, Mellon said.

SWOYERSVILLE: The regular monthly meeting of the Catholic War Veterans Memorial Post 1601 will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Swoyersville American Legion. Commander Donald Rakus will conduct the meeting and urges all members to partake in this important meeting.
