WILKES-BARRE TWP. — With a grand opening planned for next week, Bob’s Discount Furniture will be joining the list of new retail businesses opening in Wilkes-Barre Township this year.
The opening is the latest development in the township’s retail shuffle. Party City moved into the Wilkes-Barre Township Marketplace and Shoe Carnival is scheduled to open in the same plaza in November. Earlier this summer Gabe’s opened its doors in the East End Centre, Wilkes-Barre Township.
On Thursday Bob’s Discount Furniture will hold a grand opening starting at 9:45 a.m. for a 34,000-square-foot store in the former Circuit City store front in the Wilkes-Barre Commons off Mundy Street. Family friendly activities will be held throughout the day and extend through the Labor Day weekend, including balloons, face painting and other children’s entertainment.
The business created 20 new jobs ranging from store sales associates to management.
Excited to be moving into the neighborhood, Bob Kaufman, president of Bob’s Discount Furniture, said he believes his quality furniture and low prices will fit in to the current market place and area demographics.
As the 14th largest furniture retailer in the country, Kaufman said his buying power — combined with his experienced buyers seeking out the “latest and greatest home fashions” — allows him to keep his prices low.
“We understand buying furniture is the second or third largest purchase consumers make,” Kaufman said.
Creating a relaxing atmosphere, he said customers are encouraged to visit the in-store cafe which offers gourmet ice cream, fresh baked cookies and other refreshments, free.
Noting business success is dependent on the community, Kaufman said giving back through charitable contributions is part of their corporate culture.
According to Liz Aquilino, spokesperson for Bob’s Discount Furniture, the company donated a total of $10,000 the following area schools:
• $2,500 each to Elmer L. Meyers Junior Senior High School and G.A.R. Memorial Junior Senior High School;
• $1,000 to each of the following: Daniel J. Flood Elementary School, Solomon/Plains Township Junior High School, Dodson Elementary School, Bear Creek Community Charter School and James M. Coughlin Junior Senior High School.
The Bob’s Charitable Foundation link off mybobs.com, states “over one million dollars in gift certificates and monetary donations distributed each year to social service agencies, charities, group homes and community fundraisers, children’s charities, schools and community service groups.”
