The Alliance of the Scranton District Dental Society recently met at Bazil’s in Clarks Summit to reorganize and plan events for 2010. Plans are being made to assist with the SDDS community effort for National Children’s Dental Health month in February. The Alliance was formed in 1935 by 20 spouses of area dentists and was the second of its kind in the nation. Throughout the years, the Alliance has served as a voice of dentistry in the community, initiating such programs as distribution of toothbrushes to day care centers, classrooms, and institutions for children and adults; and has donated funds to cancer research, Pennsylvania Association for the Blind, Boys and Girl’s Clubs, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and the American Red Cross. During World War II, the Alliance wrapped surgical dressings for the war effort. In 1966, the spouses collected usable instruments and small pieces of dental equipment from area dentists for the School of Dentistry in Thailand. Beginning in 1970 and continuing through 1990, the Alliance also awarded scholarships to students entering dental hygiene programs at area colleges. The Scranton Alliance became a member of the national Alliance to the American Dental Association, which was formed in 1956. At the recent reorganization, first row from left, are: Barb Wadsworth, Lori Langan, Maggie Mariotti, Susan Bonacci, Connie Hayes. Second row: Dale Miller, Terry Thran, Sarah Angelo, Jane Yeomans, Jennifer Gallagher, Linda Frantz. Myrna Lally is also a member of the Alliance.
