EDWARDSVILLE — Get a free cup of java and a doughnut this month as Dunkin Donuts of Northeastern Pennsylvania and American Red Cross kick off a month-long campaign to drive blood and platelets donations in August.

The event started today, Monday, at 11 a.m. at the Dunkin Donuts, 33-A West Side Mall in Edwardsville.

During today’s event, a free voucher for a free pound of Dunkin Donuts coffee will also be given to those who donate blood or platelets, according to the press release.

During the summer months, the American Red Cross receive fewer blood and platelet donors. On average, the American Red Cross estimates there is a decrease of two donors at every blood drive held in June, July and August.

Fewer donors result in a total of nearly 100,000 fewer donations in the summer months.

To meet the needs of patients throughout the county, the American Red Cross must collect 15,000 donations daily.

“Patients do not get a summer holiday or vacation from needing blood or platelets,” Colin Riccobon, external communications manager at Northeastern Pennsylvania Red Cross Blood Services Region said in a written press release. “We hope this campaign will motivate more donors to support the Red Cross during this crucial time and help save lives.”
