George Kavulich was hired as vice president of underwriting for the Lackawanna Insurance Group, headquartered in Wilkes-Barre. George has over 30 years of insurance company and agency management experience.
He will manage the underwriting department ensuring the implementation of the company’s underwriting guidelines, quality risk selection and policy retention standards. He is responsible for the adherence to the rules and regulations of the Pennsylvania Insurance Department and other regulatory agencies.
George earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Wilkes College. He serves on the board of directors for the Pennsylvania State Police Troop R Camp Cadet Program.
He and his wife, Ann, reside in Archbald and have two children — a daughter, Leanne, and son, USAP Captain George III.
T.J. Arant, Ph.D., was named as the Misericordia University interim vice president of academic affairs (VPAA). Dr. Arant will serve through June 2015 as the university conducts a national search for a permanent (VPAA) during the academic year.
Dr. Arant served as a tenured faculty member, executive director, VPAA, executive vice president/provost and president. He served as a faculty member at The Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, Durham, N.C., and as a tenured member of the faculty at Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C., where he received seven teaching awards.
As the executive director of the East Central Colleges Consortium, he facilitated collaboration and communication across nine colleges in three states. Dr. Arant primarily was tasked with the development of faculty as teacher-scholars and as administrators. He offered programs for more than 3,500 faculty participants and administered consortium-wide study abroad programs with 10 international universities.
At Notre Dame College, Dr. Arant led efforts to reallocate resources into new academic lines and to add rigor to academic programming. Enrollment grew to 1,500 students during his tenure.
Dr. Arant led a team to right-size operations and helped lead accreditation efforts at The University of Mount Olive, Mt. Olive, N.C., from 2008-11. He also was responsible for the administration of $800,000 in grants.
As president of Friends University, Wichita, Kan., from 2011-14, he strategically repositioned the university for the 21st century as a regional university with national programs and an international presence. He also reorganized and supervised advancement operations that raised $7.7 million in three years.
He has published 21 articles, chapters and reference entries, made 11 presentations at national and regional professional associations, and led more than 40 faculty development workshops.
Dr. Arant earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn.; his Master of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C., and his Ph.D. in English from Duke University, Durham, N.C.
Saba Named to “Best Lawyers in America”
Attorney David W. Saban, Kingston, will be listed in the 2015 edition of “The Best Lawyers in America.”
Saba has practiced many types of law and counseled thousands of clients over a 40-year career. He devoted most of his years of practice to representing injured people.
Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Saba earned his bachelor’s degree from King’s College and went to law school at Emory University in Atlanta. He started practicing law in 1974 and spent the first four years of his career at Rosenn Jenkins & Greenwald, Wilkes-Barre. He then moved to Hourigan, Kluger, Spohrer & Quinn, Kingston, where he made partner and practiced until 1996 when he left to start his own practice. In 2000, he became managing partner of the law firm of Saba Endler & Associates, Kingston, and left in 2005 to rejoin Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn. In 2014, he re-entered private practice in Kingston.
Saba is certified in pretrial and civil trial advocacy by the National Board of Legal Specialty Certification. He is a member of the Multimillion Dollar Advocates Forum and was named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer from 2007 through 2009. From 2013 through 2015, he has been listed in “The Best Lawyers in America” for medical malpractice and personal injury. He also has the highest AV Rating from Martindale-Hubbell for ethics and professional ability.
