First, let me congratulate all those who broke into 2010 with their first official draft of the new fantasy football season. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a first-time rookie, that first draft of the year is officially the beginning of your quest to gain, or regain, championship glory.
But you’re probably asking yourself, “What do I do now?”
Having a solid draft is only one key component to a successful season. If you’re wondering what to do next, don’t fret. Here are a couple key things you can do to make your season that much more successful.
1. REEVALUATE YOUR DRAFT
When dealing with a draft that has a small timer, it’s sometimes not easy to look at your roster and give quick evaluations. Sometimes owners get so caught up with the players still available, that they don’t have time to look at their roster as a whole. Look at your roster. Do you have a solid starting lineup? Is there a certain area you think you can improve with a trade or a pickup from the waiver wire? This will help you plan out a strategy for fixing the weaknesses on your team.
2. SCAN THE WAIVER WIRE
Many times, there will be a player or two, sometimes even three, that are begging to be picked up. Sometimes these guys are simply passed up because they fell under the radar, news regarding their status on their team changed, or, quite simply, owners just couldn’t fit anyone else on their rosters. It happens. A few years ago, Thomas Jones was just sitting there after our draft. The person that claimed him that year got 1,335 rushing yards and nine touchdowns out of him. Now, this usually doesn’t happen nowadays. But leagues that limit positions, such as mine, could have plenty of value left in the waiver pool.
3. CREATE A WATCH LIST
Once you have scanned the wire, create a watch list of your free agent targets and the guys that you want to watch closely. A lot of fantasy football managing sites allow you to add free agents to your watch list. We all get busy and real-life creeps up, so you might forget the name of that hot shot running back you saw in camp. This will allow you to keep tabs on all of your targets and make that quick acquisition if your target has a good week instead of keeping tabs using Post-It notes that, you know, will end up getting thrown away.
4. EVALUATE TRADE OPTIONS
Besides looking at your own roster, look at all the rosters. Do you have three solid running back options, but you’re weaker at receiver? Find an owner who may be weaker at running back but can afford to part with a higher-valued receiver. Find the position that you are weakest at and see if you can trade one player or a package to another owner to fill that gap. But don’t overpay. And no matter how bad a player is, don’t let another owner try to sucker you into taking him simply because the owner is talking him up. More often than not, another owner is looking to dump his garbage for gold.
5. USE OUR TOOLS
