Loan blooms for floral shop

It took a few extra days, but council Thursday approved an Urban
Development Action Grant loan to Tom and Maria Mattern, paving the way for a
grand opening of their floral shop in September.
Approval of the loan was to have occurred at council’s meeting Monday, but
because Mayor Gary Reese failed to get council’s approval to hire a lawyer
other than the town solicitor to prepare the agreement, council tabled the
matter and scheduled Thursday’s special meeting.

Council learned Monday night that borough solicitor Thomas Kostelansky had
not prepared the loan agreement for the Matterns and because of that, council
directed Kostelansky to prepare an agreement and present it for approval at
Thursday’s special meeting.

Council also agreed it would not grant approval if the lawyer retained by
Reese were to submit a bill.

The Matterns were present for both meetings when council unanimously
approved the $100,000 loan.

Mattern said seven to 10 people will be employed at the floral shop, which
will be located at 447 Market St., former site of Valley Electric. Mattern
said flowers and specialty gift items will be sold in the shop.
