The American Lung Association will host the Arena Climb on Saturday, April 6 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, 255 Highland Park Boulevard in Wilkes-Barre. The annual event will occur at 1 p.m. with registration set to begin at noon. All proceeds benefit the American Lung Association in Pennsylvania.
Now in its fifth year, this one of a kind climb seeks to raise awareness of lung disease, which includes asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer and other killer lung diseases. Lung disease is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. The ALA-PA hopes to raise $30,000 to support the mission of the American Lung Association to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.
Participants of the climb, which can include individuals and teams of athletes, family members, friends, gym members and first responders, will raise donations to support their personal challenge to climb the arena from the ground floor, along the east to west sides of the arena, and back down for a total of 1,224 stairs. As an added challenge, climbers will be timed. A Firefighter’s Challenge and a Fitness Center Challenge will take place and those who raise the most in donations will receive and display the Traveling Trophy at their location for the year.
Photos of loved ones climbers may be walking in memory of will be displayed at the event. Commemorative T-shirts, finish line photos and prizes earned according to fundraising efforts.
A two-day, one-night stay for two at one of the three Cove Haven Resorts will be awarded to the highest individual fundraiser. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are supporting this climb by offering a special American Lung Association Night the day of the climb with a discounted ticket package including hot dog, popcorn, drink and Penguins hat and will be announcing the number one fastest male and female on the ice at the game that night.
To participate in the climb, there is a registration fee of $25 and a minimum fundraising amount of $100.
