Senior Girl Scouts
    plan SPCA donation drive
   
Senior Girl Scout Troop 665 is holding a donation drive for items to be
given to the local chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals. The drive is a community service project for the troop.
   
Donation boxes are located at BiLo supermarket, Agway, and Thomas’ Market.
The boxes will be available for the next two weeks. Anyone who would like to
arrange for a home pickup, or who would like to make a monetary donation, call

Fire station
   
open to public
   
The Dallas Fire and Ambulance Co. invites members of the community to an
Open House from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Dallas Station 1, E. Center Hill
Road. The fire station is located near the Little League complex on Church
Street.
   
The company’s new Pierce Rescue Engine and the new Horton ambulance will be
featured at the event, as well as an aero-medical helicopter. Blood pressure
screenings will also be available.

Riding-Ho 4-H
   
plans horse show
   
The Riding-Ho 4-H Club will host a horse show at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the
Luzerne County fairgrounds on Route 118. Classes include novice walk trot,
junior division (8-13), senior division (14-18), adult division, and adult
walk/trot.
   
Entry fees are $15 for the day for 4-H members; $25 for the day for
non-members; or $4 per class. Stalls will be available for $10. The show will
award $750 worth of prizes and ribbons.

American Legion plans
   
annual peach sale
   
The Daddow-Isaacs American Legion Post 672 will hold its annual peach sale
Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Post Home on Route 415. The peaches will be available
for $7.50 per pack, $15 per half-bushel, and $28 per bushel. Tickets for the
peaches are being sold from noon to 7 p.m. every day at the Post Home.

Craft sale, flea market
   
to be held Aug. 18
   
The Order of the Eastern Star’s 13th annual craft sale and flea market will
be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18 at the OES building at the
intersection of Foster Street and Woodlawn Avenue. The building is located
behind CVS Pharmacy.
   
The event is being sponsored by the building association and 8-foot by
12-foot vendor spaces are available for $10 apiece. Lunch will be available
and Welsh cookies will be sold.

The Wyoming County Senior Center will hold its annual picnic from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10 at Camp Lackawanna. Activities include bingo, Chinese
auction, birthday celebrations for members born in July and August, and

mailed to residents
   
Tax collector Peggy Moyer reminds township residents that 2001 Lake-Lehman
School District property and per capita tax bills were mailed July 9. Anyone
who did not receive a bill should call Moyer at 675-2246 immediately.
   
Anyone with an escrow account should forward the bill to their mortgage
company for payment. Per capita taxes must be paid by residents age 18 and
older. Exceptions are single residents with an income less than $5,00 and
married couples with an income less than $10,000. Forms for the exemptions are
available from the Moyer upon request.
   
All payments must be postmarked on or before Sept. 7 to be eligible for the
two percent rebate. To receive a receipt, enclose a self-addressed stamped
envelope with the payment.

Orloski mails
   
2001 tax bills
   
Tax collector Ruth Orloski reminds township residents that 2001 school,
property, and per capita tax bills were mailed July 10 directly to the
homeowner.
   
Anyone with an escrow account should forward the bill to their mortgage

holding 2001 fund drive
   
The Dallas Fire and Ambulance Co. is holding its annual ambulance
subscription campaign and fire department fund drive. Letters were mailed to
borough residents in May. The ambulance subscription period runs from July 1,
2001 through June 30, 2002.
   
Anyone who did not receive a letter should call 675-0636 from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. Monday through Friday.

Temporary signs
   
prohibited without permit
   
Township supervisors remind residents that temporary signs made of paper,
cardboard or similar material, intended to attract public attention, cannot be
attached to utility poles, lamp posts or any public structure without a
permit. Examples of these signs include political signs, notices of events,
and other functions being held by nonprofit organizations. It does not include
no trespassing, no fishing, no hunting, or reward notices.
   
Even with a permit, signs cannot be posted sooner than 45 days before the
event and must be removed within 30 days after the event. Permits are $30 and
will be returned if the signs are taken down during the allotted time period.
   
KINGSTON TWP.
   
Burning ban is lifted
   
by township supervisors
   
The Kingston Township Board of Supervisors recently lifted the ban on open
burning. Township residents are reminded that permits are needed for all open
fires. The ordinance states only wood, paper, tree branches, tree leaves, and
yard trimmings may be burned.
   
There are other places to dispose the above items, including the township’s
compost area at the Center Street Public Works Facility. The facility is open
from 7 a.m. to dark Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and
Sunday. Those hours are good through Nov. 30.

Mercy Center Auxiliary
   
meets every Tuesday
   
The Mercy Center Auxiliary will continue to meet during the summer from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. every Tuesday at the center on Lake Street. During the meeting,
members will prepare for upcoming special events and holidays.
   
The Auxiliary recently donated a refrigerator, electric stove, and other
electrical equipment to “Catherine’s Place,” a place named for Mother
Catherine McAuley, founder of the Mercy Center.

needed at The Meadows
   
The Meadows Nursing Center on Lake Street is looking for volunteers –
adults and teenagers – to escort and interact with residents at the center.
Activities include reading, playing games, socializing at group parties,
helping with arts and crafts, and taking residents outside for walks.
