EAST ORANGE, N.J.
Student dies in shooting

Authorities in New Jersey say a 19-year-old Seton Hall University student has died in an overnight shooting that injured four other people at a private party.

Essex County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Katherine Carter says Jessica Moore died from her injuries at 3:20 p.m. Saturday. Moore had been hospitalized in critical condition after the shooting just after midnight.

Police say the shooter was a man who was denied access to the party, then left and returned with a handgun.

Police say that in addition to Moore, four others, who have not been identified, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. One has since been released.

Police say the shooter remains at large. They’re offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s capture.

The apartment is located less than a mile from the university.

STROUDSBURG
Fires hit university dorm

Police are looking for possible suspects after a series of small fires forced the evacuation of a dormitory at East Stroudsburg University.

The Pocono Record of Stroudsburg reports police say smoke from the four small fires set off alarms in Hawthorn Hall around 3 a.m. Friday.

About 380 students had to be evacuated while fire crews responded, but no serious injuries were reported.

One fire was set in the laundry room and three others were set in bathroom trash cans.

University spokesman Doug Smith says no suspect has been identified, but that Pennsylvania State Police are investigating in conjunction with university police.

Students were eventually allowed to return after about an hour and a half.

VERONA, Italy
Victims launch appeal

Italian victims of pedophilic clergy want such sexual abuse declared a crime against humanity, and they launched an international appeal on Saturday during the first public gathering of such victims in Italy.

Organizer Salvatore Domolo, a former victim and an ex-priest, said the group is looking abroad for solidarity because justice for pedophile victims is hard to come by in Italy with a statute of limitations of 10 years.

In all, several dozen victims and family members came to the Verona gathering, which organizers hope will help isolated victims to know they are not alone and persuade an Italian public reluctant to believe priests and nuns could have committed such crimes.

LAGOS, Nigeria
Laureate forms new party

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka launched a newly formed Nigerian political party Saturday, using the power of rhetoric to challenge apathetic voters in the oil-rich nation to overcome a government he called cynical and brutal.

Members of the Democratic Front for a People’s Federation elected Soyinka as its leader during the party’s inaugural meeting. The 76-year-old essayist, easily recognizable by a shock of white hair, later told reporters he wouldn’t run as a candidate in the nation’s 2011 presidential election.
