Wilkes University recently selected students Martina Barna and Sofia Soares as drum majors to lead the university’s new marching band. The band, the only collegiate marching band in northeast Pennsylvania, will debut at the Colonels’ first home football game in the fall. The two women were chosen following auditions held earlier in the spring. Barna is a sophomore chemistry major from Archbald and Soares is a sophomore pre-pharmacy student from Effort. Philip G. Simon, associate professor of performing arts, will direct the band, which will perform in drum corps style and will include wind and percussion musicians and a color guard.
