Scranton organizations come together to stop AIDS
On March 7, Maternal and Family Health Services, United Neighborhood Centers of NEPA and The Wright Center for Primary Care will hold “Stop, Think, Act: An All-Ages AIDS Empowerment Workshop” at UNC’s Progressive Center, 414 Olive St., Scranton. The free event is being held in celebration of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
The event will kick off at 6 p.m. and feature free HIV and STI screenings, a talk by Dr. Shubhra Shetty, an infectious disease specialist, and contests and prizes. There will also be educational booths.
In addition, Stop, Think, Act organizers invite area photography enthusiasts to submit AIDS awareness photography to F-Stop: An AIDS Awareness Photo Contest in the weeks leading up to the event. The contest’s winning photo and 10 runners up will be selected for F-Stop: Ending AIDS One Pixel at a Time, a traveling exhibit that will open at Stop, Think, Act.

Free photo sessions for breast cancer patients, survivors
ShadowCatcher Photography invites breast cancer patients and survivors to participate in “I Picture Hope,” which includes free ‘boudoir photography sessions that include a day of pampering and a free photo shoot. Participants will receive the first five digital images at no charge and can purchase prints, with the proceeds going to Candy’s Place.
“I Picture Hope” includes an international network of professional photographers who are offering free photo sessions to women who are currently battling and have survived breast cancer. Photographer Lori Prashker-Thomas of ShadowCatcher Ltd. Photography, a breast cancer survivor herself, is sponsoring the fundraiser.

Diabetic education session scheduled
A diabetic education session, sponsored by Allied Services Integrated Health System Home Health Division, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon March 6 in the John Heinz patient dining room, 150 Mundy St., Wilkes Barre Township.

Blue Ribbon Foundation grants support children’s dental health
This month marks National Children’s Dental Health Month, and The Blue Ribbon Foundation of Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania (BCNEPA) has recently funded programs that will provide preventive dental care to at-risk children and their families throughout northeastern and north central Pennsylvania.
During 2012, approximately $18,000 in Foundation grants were awarded to dental health initiatives at two regional nonprofits, resulting in nearly 1,000 children and adults receiving check-ups, cleanings and sealants that will improve their long-term dental and physical health.
Locally, the Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) Foundation received an $8,000 grant to support services for the uninsured at the Benco Dental Clinic at the LCCC Health Sciences Center in downtown Nanticoke. Blue Ribbon Foundation funds helped purchase supplies that were used to treat 480 at-risk children and adults, or more than 92 percent of the patients the Clinic served from August through December 2012.
