The local Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) recently held its 43rd annual recognition luncheon at the Genetti Hotel and Conference Center, Wilkes-Barre. FGP is sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging for Luzerne/Wyoming Counties and federally funded by the Corporation for National Service. Foster Grandparents are individuals age 55 or older that meet income eligibility standards and possess a desire to work with children. For 20 hours per week of service they are entitled to many benefits, including monetary compensation. The theme of the luncheon was ‘Foster Grandparents: Worth Their Weight in Gold.’ This theme was created by the Foster Grandparents in honor of the 50th anniversary of the national FGP. Each Foster Grandparent received a 50th anniversary lapel pin and a Walmart gift card. Special awards were presented to individuals who have served for five, 10, 15 and 20 years. Dance music was provided by Twins D.J.s, Forty Fort. To apply for the program, call Mary Lou Zerfoss or Kathy Zgagowski at 570-822-1158 or 1-800-252-1512. Honorees of 15 years, from left, Mary Lou Zerfoss, director, FGP; Helene Vann, Heights-Murray Elementary School, Wilkes-Barre Area School District; and Kathy Zgagowski, coordinator, FGP.
