H.O.R.D.E. of music hits the road

After four years, we all have an idea what a Lollapalooza is. But there’s
another touring festival that hasn’t quite seeped into the rock ‘n’ roll
consciousness yet.
   
In other words, what the heck’s a H.O.R.D.E.?
   
For the record, the tour title stands for Horizons of Rock Developing
Everywhere. The tour — which this summer hits 35 North American cities —
unites like-minded, guitar-oriented bands who share a taste for jamming and
improvisation.
   
For reference, the spiritual mentors are groups such as the Grateful Dead
and the Allman Brothers.
   
So what makes a group a H.O.R.D.E. band? “All these bands have a real
musicians’ approach to the music,” explains Spin Doctors’ guitarist Eric
Schenkman.
   
Spin Doctors are the most successful group to emerge from the H.O.R.D.E.
movement; for the second straight summer, they’re headlining their own tour
while good buddies Blues Traveller and Big Head Todd & the Monsters remain
part of the H.O.R.D.E. with newcomers the Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies and
Sheryl Crow.
