KINGSTON — Carrie Chipego was willing to give both herself and her
teammates a pat on the back Thursday.

And why not? The entire Wilkes University field hockey team earned one for
its 1-0 victory over Gettysburg College in a key non-conference game at
Artillery Park.
Chipego scored the game-winning goal with just 5:25 remaining. This came
just minutes after the junior forward had been shaken up and sidelined after
being hit in the mouth with the ball. Yet the Wyoming Valley West graduate
quickly returned and swatted in the deciding goal of a very physical,
hard-fought win for the Colonels.

Gettysburg (9-5) entered the game ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III
South Atlantic rankings. Wilkes (8-4) is fifth in the North Atlantic, and is
hoping to move up and earn a second straight NCAA playoff berth. The win over
a very good Gettysburg squad was a step in that direction.

“It’s a great win for us,” Wilkes coach Addy Malatesta said. “Our kids are
really starting to come together. The intensity is building.”

So is the confidence, even though the Colonels might not show it at times.

“We’re quiet about it,” Chipego said. “We’re not laid back, but sometimes I
don’t think we give ourselves enough credit.”

That is changing now that Wilkes is feeling comfortable with its new
lineup. The Colonels started slowly after graduating eight seniors, including
two All-America forwards, but Chipego and many of her teammates are starting
to earn an outstanding reputation of their own, one worthy of a pat on the
back.

“At first, there were a lot of spots to fill,” Chipego said. “Now, we’re
really working well together.”

Chipego, the leading scorer for the Colonels with nine goals and four
assists, was denied on a breakaway late in the first half.

One of Gettysburg’s best scoring chances came when freshman Carolyn
Anzalone, a Wyoming Seminary graduate, got off a short volley that was stopped
by Wilkes goalie Tracy Engle late in the first half.

Anzalone, who is having an outstanding rookie year for the Bullets, did not
start. She is coming off an injury suffered when she was hit in the mouth with
the ball and needed several stitches to close a cut. But when she came in,
Anzalone was a factor for Gettysburg.

Chipego got whacked in the mouth while streaking toward goal with about 15
minutes left. After she was checked out by a trainer, she came back into the
game and scored on a rebound. Chipego nearly made it 2-0 with three minutes
left, but her penalty stroke went just wide.

The Wilkes defense, though, made the miss immaterial.

“The defense held its own,” Malatesta said. “They made all the big plays
when they had to. It was never say die for 70 minutes.”

Bloom field hockey

EAST STROUDSBURG — Bloomsburg University continues to be on top of the

the first half.

Barndt to give the Huskies the lead once again. Amber Hess also scored for
Bloomsburg.
