GAR Memorial High School Class of 1953 recently celebrated its 60th anniversary reunion at the East Mountain Inn. Cornelius (Corny) Salvaterra presided as the master of ceremonies for the evening. Beverly Collins led the group in the singing of the Alma Mater and the class song. Guest speaker was Tony Brooks, former executive director of the Luzerne County Historical Society, who presented a slide presentation and talk, ‘250 Years of Wilkes-Barre Architecture,’ with a history of GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Memorial High School, which was named in honor of the Civil War veterans for their service to the nation. The next class reunion is planned for the summer of 2015. At the reunion, from left, first row, are Beverly Collins, Joan Ritza Dorko, Donna Lee Verry Ungvarsky, Mildred Christian Salvaterra, Virginia Walizer Groover, Helen Martino Saunders, Rosemary Fino Finn and Edith Reed Ermisch. Second row: Doris Wright Garrett, Anne Price Sherwood, Louis Savelli, Dominick Aufiero, Joe Merlie, Robert Shaw, John Delmore, Daniel Pisarcik and Joan Pisano Campisano. Third row: Cornelius Salvaterra, George Bekampis, Thomas Sarnecky, Carl Dorko, Joseph Tweedle, Eugene Roth and Walter Sumpolec. Also in attendance was Gloria Saba Rogers.
