WILKES-BARRE — The people of Plains Township will not be silent. Several
residents attended the Wilkes-Barre Area School Board’s regular meeting
Tuesday to protest the name of the Leo E. Solomon Educational Complex/Plains
Memorial K-8 School.

They want the name of former superintendent Leo Solomon removed from the
school. Resident Frank Mattia said he feels the new school should be named to
honor veterans from Plains Township. “You must yield to this, or tell the
people that someone else’s name is more important to you then the war dead,”
Mattia told board members.
Referring to the recent defeat of three incumbents in the primary election,
Maggie Antinovitch told the board,”I thank God we got three new ones, and
we’re going to clean house.”

“That’s why you won’t be sitting in that chair in November,” Angela Gasky
told board member Michael Rushton.

Board members did not respond to the criticism.

In other business:

Superintendent Jeff Namey said the contract to supply soft drinks
throughout the district and a computer contract might be awarded later this
month.

Namey said the district is looking at buying about 1,000 IBM or Compaq
computers.
