Council embraces Opportunity Zone Act
   
Council members voted Thursday night to participate in the Keystone
Opportunity Zone Act.
    The act promotes economic development by granting tax breaks to businesses
that invest in the designated zones, said Robert Connolly, executive director
of the Luzerne County Redevelopment Authority. Connolly made a presentation to
the council, stating his favor for the program.
   
Council members designated the Avoca Rail Yard as the area to be developed
under the act.
   
Borough solicitor Charles McCormick said the program is potentially very
positive for Avoca. He said there is a good chance a large employer will take
advantage of the opportunity for tax breaks and will invest in the area. He
also said that area is fairly isolated and any development will not cause
traffic problems.
   
He said the rail yard needs a strong push to be developed, and designating
it as a economic development zone could help it.

Council members appointed Tony Blaskiewicz as supervisor of the sports
program at the Community Center.
