AFTER EARTH — This sci-fi adventure about a boy who must become a man to save himself and his wounded-warrior father on a hostile world is a corny, generally humorless M. Night Shyamalan picture without his trademark surprises and twists. PG-13 for sci-fi action violence and disturbing images. 100 mins. • 1/2

EPIC — Derivative as all get out and plainly concocted by a committee, this is a children’s animated film that is more entertaining and emotional than it has any right to be. Characters make sacrifices and die, miss their parents and mourn. And we’re touched. At least a little. PG for mild action, scary images and rude language. 102 mins. •• 1/2

FAST & FURIOUS 6 — Regular fans will be delighted with this latest installment, which again ups the ante with the cars, crazy stunts, crashes and fights. Vin Diesel’s Dom, now wealthy and living the good life, is lured back into action by his erstwhile nemesis, the federal agent Hobbs (the absurdly buff Dwayne Johnson). PG-13 for intense violence and action and mayhem, sexuality and language. 130 mins. ••

THE GREAT GATSBY — Jazzy, fizzy and often fun, Baz Luhrmann’s “Pretty Good Gatsby” takes F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Great American Novel out for a sometimes dazzling, always irreverent spin. PG-13 for violent images, sexual content, smoking, partying and brief language. 143 mins. •••

THE HANGOVER PART III — Here we are with part three of the disappointingly lazy, beat-for-beat rehash of the wild and wildly successful original “Hangover” from 2009. R for pervasive language, sexual references, violence, drugs and brief graphic nudity. 100 mins. •••

IRON MAN 3 — The finale to this trilogy of Marvel marvels is the jokiest and cutest of them all. PG-13 for intense sci-fi action and violence and brief suggestive content. 130 mins. •• 1/2

NOW YOU SEE ME — Going into this magic-themed heist movie with a terrific cast, you want to believe. The idea is fresh, the introductory scenes enticing. Then the dialogue turns formulaic, the plot gets increasingly illogical, and character development grinds to a halt. PG-13 for language, action and sexual content. 116 minutes. •• 1/2

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS — J.J. Abrams’ film is reverential, faithful and steeped in “Trek” mythology. It’s also an excessively derivative what-if rehash of themes and interactions that came before, most of the characters lesser copies and even caricatures of the originals. PG-13 for intense sci-fi action and violence. 132 mins. ••
