Tyler Weinberger

When it comes to the Academy Awards in Hollywood, better known as the “Oscars,” the closest most get is a televised view of the procession of celebrities on the red carpet and a few hours of acceptance speeches. But for a Waverly film student and aspiring director, a chance to attend and report on the Academy Awards from that famous red carpet may be just a click of your computer mouse away.

A 2008 graduate of Abington Heights High School and sophomore at Emerson College in Boston, Tyler Weinberger is competing with some of America’s best and brightest film students in a national contest conducted by MTV. The grand prize: A trip to Los Angeles later this year to attend and cover the 82nd Academy Awards Ceremony, which will be held at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood March 7. In order to win the opportunity of a lifetime, Weinberger and his teammate Dean Dimitruk are one of 10 teams of students from across the United States entered in the Oscar Red Carpet Correspondent Contest by mtvU.com. Until Feb.10, fans can visit mtvu.com and vote for their favorite video, with the top three vote-getters being flown to Los Angeles . Fans can vote again online to choose the lucky.

“I heard about this contest from a faculty member here at school who runs our TV studio,” Weinberger said in a recent phone interview. “My teammate on this, Dean, is also my roommate and we work really well together. We looked at all the videos from last year’s contest, and tried to put together a script that would be as funny as we could make it.”

Together with Dimitruk—a central Philadelphia native and fellow film production major—Weinberger crafted a video which he feels is funny, entertaining and creative. After serving as the cameraman for the video, he says he enjoys hearing from other students on campus how much they enjoy seeing the fruit of his labor. Weinberger is hoping his sense of creativity will put he and his teammate over the top. When asked about who he would most like to interview if his entry is the winning video, Weinberger was almost speechless at the possibility.

“George Clooney…James Cameron… the names that are going to be there are beyond incredible,” the Abington Heights graduate said . Weinberger added he is hoping his contest entry can be the start of something big.
