LARAMIE, Wyo. — Wyoming began its football season almost exclusively using a spread offensive scheme.

Three weeks in, the Cowboys transitioned, adding h-backs or tight ends in what they dubbed a wing-t set similar to what they used at times in 2009.

Last week, UW’s ever-evolving offense added yet another look, a pistol formation, in hopes of turning around its lackluster numbers during the second half of the season.

“Our kids are coming along and our scheme is growing,” UW offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo said. “I was excited about some of the stuff we were able to do formationally and keep them off-balance a bit and put some drives together. We’ve just got to finish the drives.”

The pistol formation uses a quarterback that is not under center, but isn’t deep in a shotgun set, either.

Instead, Austyn Carta-Samuels lines up somewhere in between, with a running back a few yards directly behind him and an H-Back directly to his side.

The Pokes used this set 10 times out of 55 offensive plays against the Utes.

“In that game, we wanted to get a downhill run at them, just to change up tendency from always running opposite where the back’s at,” UW coach Dave Christensen said.
