SOUTH ABINGTON- During a supervisors meeting on Monday, Feb. 8, South Abington Township supervisors discussed reduction in garbage rates for senior citizens, stating they can be applied for in the South Abington Township building. “Senior citizens get lower rates, especially if you produce one bag per week,” Supervisor Mark Dougherty said.
To qualify, there must be two people or less living in the home, producing no more than one can of trash per week with no limit on the amount of recycling collected. Once an individual’s application is notarized, seniors can see a reduction of 35 percent in billing, from $74.63 per quarter to $48.51. Applicants may contact Susan McClane at 586-2111 ext. 1 for information.
In other business, supervisors also passed an amendment to sewer ordinance Numbers 113, 139 and 149, which deal with regulating the source and collection of municipal solid waste and recyclable material placed for disposal within the corporate limits of South Abington Township. The projected rates for disposal per dwelling unit each year are: $298.50 for 2009, $309.67 for 2010, $321.71 for 2011, $335.56 for 2012 and $350.40 for 2013.
Township manager David O’Neill also announced the reassignment of funds from the Army Core of Engineers of $323,000 which was set for a 2001 project. He said the funds will now be used to reimburse work at the South Abington Sewer Plant.
At 8:20 p.m., supervisors went into executive session concerning personnel matters. The next South Abington Township meeting will take place on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
